Weber Costello Art Deco Airplane Base Black Oceans Globe
About the Item
A fine example of quite possibly the most popular vintage globe produced in the 20th century. With clean Art Deco/Retro lines and a sleek airplane base, this globe has sustained high demand among collectors and interior designers alike. The chrome finish combined with the black oceans and vivid colored lands provides a dramatic display in any setting. A classic Weber Costello design and a staple of any globe collection.
The orb is made of pasteboard, offering black oceans instead of the more common blue/green. Half meridian and airplane base are made of metal with a chrome finish. Total height approx 16", 12" diameter
Weber Costello began producing black ocean globes with airplane-form bases prior to World War II. The globe, issued from the 1930s to the early 1940s, had geographic entities in a muted color palette. In very well preserved condition the colors are exceptional, the Equator tape quite complete, the chrome base is in mint condition, however there is very light rubbing to the orb.
The age of the globe has been identified in part by the political borders displayed: Manchukuo is shown, indicating a date of 1930s to 1945. Israel has not yet replaced Palestine (1948), and Korea is not yet shown to be divided (1953).
