Antique Art Nouveau Commedia Dell’Arte Painted Paravent/Screen Paris ca 1920

About the Item

This spectacular Art Nouveau Era Paravent/Screen is a true eye catcher and one of a kind piece of art full of fantasy and eccentric imagination. It has been designed and painted in Italian Commedia dell'arte style -a female character, most likely Colombina, wearing so called Zanni mask (a Venetian carnival mask with extensively prolongated nose) and a typical Venetian Commedia dell'arte pattern costume of Arlecchino (Harlequin) - her lover. The Paravent consists of 5 panels, every part is hand painted (Charcoal and Aquarell ) and all together it looks like one large painting. Every element of each panel is smoothly continues further to the next scene making all five panels look so connected as it will be the same lady wearing same fabrics, just from a different angle. The traditional Venetian mask has been exaggerated and painted as a bird’s face. It makes the Paravent look exotic, magical and undoubtedly attractive. The lady/ladies painted are half naked which brings a certain erotic feel to it. Period of Art Nouveau was time of daring artists, painters, composers and designers, who were experimenting and trying new things and at the same time enjoying life in its fullest with no bounders to their imagination and talent. This unique Paravent has been made out of strong and beautiful Mahogany wood which makes it heavy and solid. The back is padded and perfectly stitched and trimmed around linen cover each panel. A truly magnificent unusual piece of art, rare find and a collector item of the highest period of Art Nouveau in Paris.

This is an absolutely rare and one of a kind custom made Plaque represents the History of Jewish People and their acceptance in society and freemasonry through out the world. The Plaque had been hand crafted and designed by August Klein- Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court of the Emperor Franz Josef of Austria. The Revolution of 1848 in the Austrian Empire seen by many Jewish intellectuals as a welcome opportunity to agitate for the emancipation of their community. Generally the social evolution of the Jewish community, the growing number of Jews who wanted to become Masons, their cultural integration, and the progress of the process that would soon lead to their legal emancipation all worked in favor of this change in attitude. In Austria it all started in 1742, only 25 years after the founding of the Grand Lodge of London and Winchester, the Lodge "Aux Trois Canons” was consecrated in Vienna by a Lodge from Breslau. It was, however, closed only six months later by order of “Empress” Maria Theresa I. Her husband Franz Stephan von Lothringen, (later the German Emperor Franz I...
