About the Item
A colorful floral tropical still life with island background by English artist Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898). Beardsley was born in Brighton, England, and after studying at the Westminster School of Art, he began producing drawings and caricatures for English magazines. He became best known for his masterly use of black and white to produce highly ornamental and rhythmic drawings printed in publications worldwide.
This foliate oil on canvas was laid down on a four panel shaped screen, signed lower right, with a leather upholstery border. The back of the screen has been painted black. Some surface losses, craquelure, upholstery tack losses, and other imperfections and light wear. Dimensions: 72 in H x 64 in W (each panel is 16 in W) x .83 in D. Ref: 771

The grotesque is a type of ornamentation often used in painting, sculpture and minor arts, for example in ceramics and tapestries, developed at the end of the 15th century.
