Arts and Crafts Coromandel Folding Screen w. Embossed & Gilt Leather Decoration
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and highly decorative, work of art folding screen.
Some will call this amazing and practical size folding screen Arts and Crafts and some will call it Classical Art Nouveau. If you are into applied arts from the turn of the century then the sheer quality of the workmanship and the beauty of this unique screen is all that really matters. The amount of work that went into making this intricate piece is amazing and the result is breath taking. The embossed leather panel in the middle is signed M.J. Slager and as so often is the case we cannot find anything on this artist. When you look at the beauty, the detail and the overal workmanship it is unbelievable that such a skilled artist did not go on and have a career. In this case, maybe the first world war had something to do with it. The outer frame of this three-piece screen are made of the most beautiful, solid coromandel and they come with hand-carved leaf finials on top. The embossed leather panels have the most beautiful and intricate motifs. The base paint on the leather panels is brown and thanks to this layer of paint, the gilding on top still is in perfect condtion. The dark color of the base paint also makes the gilding stand as beautifully as it does. The striking leather panels are fitted in the frames by remarkable and scalloped macassar borders. Overall there are a few truly minor imperfections, but it is safe to say that this unique and stunning Arts and Crafts folding screen...
