C. 1900 Indian Strong Box With Original Patina

About the Item

This wooden strong box is heavily reinforced with iron banding and can be secured with an exterior lock. The walls and top of the lockbox are made from teak. Teak was a preferred wood for storing valuables and especially useful for protecting silks. Teak is resistant to moisture (thus the preference for teak boat decks, outdoor furniture, exterior roofing and siding and etc...) Teak also repels insects and has the same level of protection for textiles as camphor or cedar wood. The fact that this box is rustic in finish suggests that it could have been used as a merchant's chest. Every vendor in the markets of India had a chest for coins and valuables. The chests protected from robbers but also discouraged pilfering by servants or family members. A determined thief could always break open such a box but an untrustworthy domestic servant would have been dissuaded from even trying.

  • Tianjin Style Sideboard With Original Patina and Original Hardware
    Located in Chicago, IL
An exceptionally original 19th century household storage coffer in the Tianjin Style. Tianjin is a large city in Northeast China that acts as the port of Beijing. It was a prosperous city and the furniture made there was known for is solidity and clean, balanced lines. Tianjin storage chests typically feature heavy brass handles and lock plates. All hardware on this chest is original and the patina on the wood is aged and lovely; natural oxblood lacquer, which has rubbed off in some areas and darkened in other areas due to more than a century of use. Tianjin chests usually have three large drawers across the top two large doors below. The piece was probably part of a dowry and exhibited in a highly visible part of the home. The whitish deposits on the legs suggest that the piece sat on a terra cotta...

  • Antique Gothic Blanket Chest / Trunk with Amazing Patina & Original Lock ca 1700
    Located in Lisse, NL
Marvelously hand-crafted chest from the late 1600s or early 1700s. One of the things that make antiques so appealing & attractive is the fact that most pieces were handmade in recognizable styles, with proven techniques AND with natural materials that could and would stand the test of time. The longer back in time we go, the more that seems to be the case. This amazing chest from circa 1680-1720 is clearly made in the Gothic Style with Gothic church window-like carvings. With Gothic style chests of this age being very rare, we were (and still are) very enthousiastic about finding it. Put together and strengthened with hand-forged, wrought iron brackets, nails AND with very large dovetails, the master carpenter provided the techniques that would guarantee the owner a chest that would last him (or her) a lifetime. As it turned out, his workmanship, in this case, created a chest that has already served some 15 generations. This heavy quality chest is made of solid elm and wrought iron only and the centuries of usage and natural aging have given this Gothic antique a patina that is simply heavenly. The striking and deeply hand-carved Gothic cathedral-like windows, but also the hand forged lock...
