Pair of Antique Tapestry Trunks
About the Item
Portable furniture was produced throughout the ages and became particularly popular during the 1500’s-1700’s, when people of privilege had more than one place of residence. Their belongings were transported by carriages and carts. Thus, their furnishings had to be constructed in a manner that would allow them to disassemble and reassemble easily.
These two French trunks with iron handles to either side house a desk and a filing/storage cabinet. They resemble the top half of a fall front desk and would have been placed upon a stand or table for easy access to the interior when pulling a chair in place. The desk has a felt covered writing surface, 4 drawers with two open compartments above each set of drawers and a locked compartment in the center. The top half is open storage. The storage/filing cabinet has a mirrored surface and velvet lined shelves for papers, jewelry or other items necessary for daily use.
They are both upholstered with hand made needlepoint and petite point panels of “The Lady and the Unicorn” scene. Nailhead ornamentation on the needlepoint panels and iron hardware for the handles. Plain velvet panels on the backs of both trunks. Original locks and one key.
These portable pieces are rare and would be wonderful on stands displayed in a bedroom, library or office. The stands are included.

Pair of Antique Tapestry Borders from Flanders, circa 1580
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful pair of tapestry fragments, hand-woven in Flanders (now Belgium), circa 1580. At roughly 132 inches (11 feet) long, the fragments were, originally, vertical borders to a very large and brightly colored tapestry. The colors have maintained their vibrancy over the last 400+ years, with deep blue, brown, green, and red accents over a gold and cream background.
Although the fragments do not have identical scenes, it is readily apparent that they originated from the same source. At the top of each fragment is a bearded warrior clad in golden armor with a flowing blue cape and green greaves. A shield rests on the ground, supported by the soldier’s left hand, while his right hand lifts a spear into the air. Towards the center of the textile is a pair of musicians, one strumming a lute, while the other plucks a lyre. At the bottom of each tapestry is a single female figure, well-dressed and sitting on a bench with one arm overhead. The remaining areas have been filled with fruit bouquets, architectural elements, and other figurative representations. A more recent navy blue border surrounds the scenes and the backs have been lined with a mauve colored linen.

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction.
The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...
