Large Sterling Silver Gilt Art Nouveau Tray by Marie Zimmermann, 21.75 in.

About the Item

An exquisite two-handled tray in sterling silver gilt by noted American metalsmith, designer and jeweler, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). The Art Nouveau tray was created before 1926, exhibited during Zimmermann's career, and comes directly from the artist's estate; it is illustrated on page 115, fig. 3.47 of The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012. The large tray measures 21.75 in. L x 5.5 in. W x 1.25 in. H and weighs a significant 1 lb 14.3 oz / 30.3 oz / 859 gr. The handles are composed of delicate flowering branches in the Japanese taste with ornamental stems, blossoms and leaves. Two of the branches and six veined leaves support the tray as feet. The entire lobed design is gilded with a rich golden satin finish. The base is fully marked with Zimmermann's MZ artist's cipher impressed over sterling. Good original condition with surface wear including nicks and scratches on the upper surface. The tray was photographed before 1926 with a decorative powder box and two bottles. This image of the original photo is reproduced in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmerman on page 114, fig, 3.46. The tray also appears in photos of Zimmermann's final exhibition in 1939 at The Faulkner Memorial Art Gallery in Santa Barbara, California. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of objects by Marie Zimmermann, making their first acquisition in 1922. A variety of her jewelry and metalwork designs can also be found in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the Columbus Museum of Art.
