19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Hall Tree

About the Item

19th century French Louis XVI painted hall tree is a majestic example of the neoclassical revival from the end of the century, possessing definitive style renderings and performing multiple functions with grace and elegance! This singular piece, which extends less than a foot away from the wall, provides a marble top console surface, a mirror to "freshen up" when leaving or entering, hooks to hang one's hats or outer garments, and even two umbrella stands also good for canes. It's like four pieces for the price of one! The exquisite hand-carved stylings were inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture and include a double arched crown that resembles an archer's bow centered with a rose wreath and sprays connected with a bow of ribbon. Below the arch at the center appears another wreath with garlands overlaid atop the upper portion of the generously sized mirror, which is framed by beading all around. Flanking the mirror are two caned panels creating interesting visual appeal, with three brass double hangers on each side for hats, coats and other outer garments. Directly under the mirror appears a demilune console with beautifully veined marble top, perfect for tossing one's keys or emptying the pockets. The consoled is framed with beading and spiral ribbon carvings, and is supported in the front with a graceful double-scrolled leg that is adorned with a rosette, acanthus plume, and scroll at the foot. Three demilune projections were designed into the baseboard, with the outermost holding tin drip pans to keep control of water shedding from umbrellas, which are also held in place with brass rails flanking the console surface. Tailored raised & recessed panels finish out the design, with the entire affair enhanced by the hand-painted finish that has achieved a lovely patina over the ensuing century. Circa 1890s Measures 91.5 H x 40.5 W x 11.5 D.
