Henry Van de Velde was a Belgian painter, architect, interior designer, and teacher. He was born on April 3, 1863, in Antwerp (Belgium) and died on October 15, 1957, in Oberägeri (Switzerland).
From the end of the 19th century, he was, along with Victor Horta and Paul Hankar, one of the founders of Art Nouveau in Belgium and, more generally, is considered one of the major figures in the Belgian modernist movement. In the early years of the 20th century, he played a decisive role in the field of architecture and decorative arts, primarily in Germany. Van de Velde was an avid reader of Viollet le Duc, and his work was deeply influenced by the master's ideas and general vision.
