Beautiful design and excellent condition drawing or painting stand with hand carved wreath.
Every now and then, a piece comes along that just stops you in your tracks. This antique easel is one of those finds. Hand-carved from rich walnut around the late 1800s, it has all the hallmarks of the era: incredible craftsmanship, a love for classical design, and just the right amount of patina from well over a century of life.
What makes this piece special are the details. Up top, a beautifully carved laurel wreath and ribbon, symbols of victory, achievement, and honor since ancient times, drape elegantly across the frame. At the center of the drawing box with panel, there’s a profile of a helmeted figure in classical style, perhaps Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and the arts. The whole thing feels like it could have come straight out of a Victorian salon or a grand artist’s studio.
The hardware is original, with lovely aged brass hinges and fittings that work smoothly. The easel folds for storage but opens up to display artwork, menus, or even a special book in the most sophisticated way possible.
