Rare Sewing Cabinet, Biedermeier Style, Russia, 1870

About the Item

A rare sewing cabinet, Biedermeier style, made of birch wood, brass, metal plate in relief. The convex legs are hooked by an element just above the curved feet with two wavy motifs and a connection with parallel carvings. Immediately below, four iron straps towards the inside and a decorative doubling towards the outside, rounded at the ends. The schematized lyre-shaped structure rises by bending over to support two brass handles, each with two decorative elements that drive into the underlying wood. Surely the most interesting feature is the shape of the cabinet, a heraldic shield, with a rectangular section. The lid is carved to indicate rods in sequence, with a peduncle for opening, and inside reveals the original paper. A geometric band with a motif of squares in relief follows the whole downward sloping edge, surmounted by an owl's beak frame. Each of the sides of the shield, front, back and band running along the full depth are surrounded by smooth bull's beak frames. The interior of these parts is decorated with a rare decoration of an underwater environment, depicting shells of various kinds and corals. All made of very thin embossed or impressed metal foil, lacquer finish. Made of birch wood, brass, metal plate in relief. Russia, circa 1870.

Finer quality and superb condition, filing cabinet by Ludwig Schraut. This rare German filing cabinet is another fine example of the quality furniture that was made in the earliest years of the 20th century. The angular design and the almost ebony color patina are an absolute joy to look at. This all original Art Deco filing cabinet for home and office is not only pleasing to the eye though. It is as stable as the day it was handcrafted and as you can see, it is extremely well taken care of. The solid wooden roller door (probably beech) still works perfectly too and it comes with a perfect working lock and the original Art Deco key...
