Regency Rosewood Boat Shaped Canterbury

About the Item

An early 19th century regency period simulated rosewood boat shaped Canterbury, having pierced carrying handle and divisions, over one frieze drawer with later brass handle, raised on elegant turned legs with original brass castors.  This unusual and elegant 19th century regency canterbury is particularly unusual in terms of it's finish. Although relatively common to find larger, cabinet type pieces of furniture which are constructed from a softwood such as beech, then paint decorated to simulate the appearance of a different, more exotic type of wood, it is quite unusual to find a small piece of furniture like this with that effect and we think that its really rather charming to be honest.  It is widely believed that canterburies are named as such due to the first object of this design being commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 18th century. Although the original format is believed to have had divisions in both directions and purposed for the storage of cutlery in the dining room, the design soon progressed and was adapted, resulting in them being manufactured mainly for the storage of sheet music from the early 19th century onwards. Nowadays of course Canterbury’s are the perfect object for collecting up all those magazines and newspapers which are lying around in the living room, study, office or any other area around the home and storing them tidily away whilst still retaining relatively easy access to them. As with all the items which we offer for sale, this regency rosewood canterbury has been attended to in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale, by our highly trained and skilled antique furniture restorers including a light clean and natural wax polish to ensure that it is in retail condition and ready to be placed immediately into the home or workplace.
