19th Century French Forged Wrought Iron Duet Lectern or Music Stand
About the Item
Place your Bible or music book on this antique, double-sided slanted page rest. Crafted in France, circa 1890 and standing on a tripartite base with three curved legs over a spiral twist central stem, the Gothic "Lutrin" (French for lectern), features wonderful forged iron work including a Fleur-de-Lys at the pediment and the same large Fleur decor with gilt finish on both sides of the book holder. The traditional music stand with turned stem is further embellished by two adjustable and retractable arms candle holders. The double-sided lectern is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich black patinated finish with gilt accents.
The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys, is a stylized lily (in French, fleur and lis mean 'flower' and 'lily' respectively) that is used as a decorative design or symbol. The fleur-de-lis has been used in the heraldry of numerous European nations, but is particularly associated with France, notably during its monarchical period. As France is a historically Catholic nation, the fleur-de-lis became "at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic," especially in French heraldry. The fleur-de-lis has been used by French royalty and throughout history to represent Catholic saints of France. In particular, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are often depicted with a lily.
