"Shou Xing under a Canopy, " Rare, Extraordinary Pair of Art Deco Sconces

About the Item

Gorgeous and elegant, this unique pair of Chinese-influenced bronze candle sconces, probably designed and made in France in the 1930s, depict Shou Xing, the traditional Chinese god of longevity, under an elaborate, scalloped canopy, above a trio of projecting candle bases. The sconce has a beautiful, deep patina and the Shou Xing figures glow with a hint of deep red. Traditionally the god of longevity is shown with a long wisped beard and a high bald head and carries a long knotted staff and pumpkin gourd holding the water of life. The high quality and style of these sconces suggest that they may have been made by Maison Jansen.
