Timo Sarpaneva / "AMBIENTE" TEXTILE / Tampella / 1966

About the Item

Ambiente textiles were introduced in 1966 and produced until the 1970s. Ambiente was a revolutionary printing technique that developed from an accident, when a printing press broke down in 1965 while witnessing the printing of wallpaper designed by Rosenlew, Seeing the irregular patterns printed with random splashes of ink, Timo Sarpaneva was fascinated by their beauty and decided to continue. After sorting out what had happened and establishing the technique, Ambiente wallpaper was commercialised and in the same year the technique was applied to textiles by the textile manufacturer Tampella. Ambiente differs from normal textile printing in that it is produced by dripping dye, water, etc. through nozzles (up to 60 nozzles per roller width) onto one of the fabric feed rollers. Although no two patterns are the same, the colour, quantity and arrangement of the dyes set in the nozzles ensure a certain consistency, which is then used to produce the patterned products. This technique has many advantages in production: it is considerably less time-consuming and cost-effective than conventional textile printing, where the same process is repeated for a number of plates, and the technique is similar to dyeing, where the dye is soaked into the fabric rather than printed, so there is no back surface and the colour fading due to washing and light is reduced. This innovative Ambiente technology was patented and manufacturing licences were sold all over the world. In 1965, Ambiente won the top prize in a contest organised by the European Packaging Federation, and in 1969, the Design Award from the AID (American Institute of Decorators). Ambiente, which Timo Sarpaneva himself called 'machine painting', eventually developed into a range of 20 different patterns and approximately 2000 colour combinations, each a unique work of art despite being a mass-produced product. When Andy Warhol met Ambiente at the opening of an Ambiente exhibition in New York in 1969, he said: 'Timo, you shoud frame those fabrics and sell them as works of art. You'd be a millionaire!.'
