An exceptional, museum quality, ottoman, baroque, gold velvet bedspread, hanging, bedcover or table cloth embroidered with gold threadwork and embellished with gold wirework - A rare survival of the ultimate, luxury status symbol in textile furnishings which were the most valuable items in a home, hand worked for the court or aristocracy - During the Baroque period Ottoman textiles were regarded as the most refined in terms of design and materials employed. - This piece is characterized by large-scale, stylized, floral motifs embroidered exclusively in gold threadwork, with the exception of minor accenting in blue and red, embellished with gold wirework. - It would have been made either for the Ottoman Court or for export to the European Court or aristocracy, where textiles of this calibre were a symbol of affluence and status and considered among the most prized luxury objects - There are numerous different types of complex stitches employed in this piece, demonstrating the skill of the embroiderer, another reference to its status. The wear to the velvet ground is expected and acceptable for a textile of this age. - Elaborate embroidery depicting stylized, floral iconography which were the favored motifs during the Baroque period - The embroidery is embellished with numerous gold wirework flowerheads, another sign of its high status.
