Renaissance style, cassone chest. This rare and practical size chest is of considerable age and it has an amazing patina. Thanks to the natural wear it looks exactly like you would expect and want a piece of this age to look. This good size chest comes with a heavy lid that is made out of one thick, large and striking slab of wood. Over the centuries the natural wear obviously required some of the parts of this chest to be replaced or strengthened and luckily former owners have made the effort. We salute them, because it has preserved the beauty and practicality of this very old antique. In case you did not know, in the compartment with the hinging lid on the right people would keep their candles. Marvelously hand-crafted chest from the late 1600 or early 1700s. One of the things that make antiques so appealing & attractive is the fact that most pieces were handmade in recognizable styles, with proven techniques AND with natural materials that could and would stand the test of time. The longer back in time we go, the more that seems to be the case. This amazing chest from circa 1680-1720 is clearly made in the Gothic Style. With Gothic style chests of this age being very rare, we were (and still are) very enthousiastic about finding it. Put together and strengthened with hand-forged, wrought iron nails AND with very large dovetails, the master carpenter provided the techniques that would guarantee the owner a chest that would last him (or her) a lifetime. As it turned out, his workmanship created a chest that has already served some 15 generations! This heavy quality chest is made of solid elm and wrought iron only. The centuries of usage and natural aging have given this Gothic antique a patina that is simply heavenly. The striking and all hand-carved Gothic lid and front, but also the hand forged lock plate are some of the other features that give this tactile chest a look and feel that will never fail to impress. Thanks to its practical size this chest will look wonderful in an entrance, in your living room, at the footend of your bed etc. The last custodian -whom is no longer with us- had put two antique Spanish earthenware...
