Alvar Aalto Stool for Artek
By Alvar Aalto, Artek
Located in Belmont, MA
Alvar Aalto stool manufactured by Artek, originally designed in 1933. Crafted in Laminated Birch. Retails warm, rich, original patina and based upon its patina and provenance appears to be an early example of Alvar Aalto's work. Alvar Aalto 1898–1976 Born in Kuortane, Finland, in 1898, Alvar Aalto began his formal training studying architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology. It was here that he met his future wife and collaborator, Aino Marsio who was also an architectural student in the program. The two were married in 1924. In 1929, Aalto won a competition to design a new sanatorium in Paimio for patients convalescing from tuberculosis; a total Gesamtkunstwerk, Aalto designed everything at Paimio, from the chairs to the sinks, to create a soothing and sanitary environment for the patients. In 1932, Aalto’s architectural drawings were featured in the landmark Modern Architecture: International Exhibition which was curated by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock and included the latest architectural innovations from around the globe. In 1935, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl, and Maire Gullichsen formed the design company, Artek. In addition to a focus on practicality, the work of Artek is marked by its use of light-colored woods, organic forms, and biomorphic lines. Though, many of Aalto’s designs were imbued with playful elements like zebra prints and reindeer fur...

Mid-Century Model “2433” Brass Desk Lamp by Valinte Oy, Finland, 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Finnish mid-century lighting design is world-famous for numerous reasons. The country’s designers managed to make strictly functional design look beautiful in addition to practicality and high-quality. This Valinte Oy desk lamp perfectly illustrates this. As seemingly with most things in Finland, this desk lamp’s design is delivered with sincerity, craftsmanship and a touch of eccentricity that shows the Fins take things simultaneously very seriously indeed, but always with a certain playfulness. This lamp’s design is simple, yet it radiates quality and style. The fully brass body has wonderful curves, especially the neck connecting the base and the shade. When the light is on, the brass base is also lit thanks to the shade’s angle, an effect that makes the lamp stand out even more. The smooth brass surface is only broken by the white switch, which is right in the middle, and has a peculiar shape that is in accordance with the restrained playfulness of Finnish designers. This model is an early 1950s design as it was already featured in Valinte Oy’s 1954 lighting...

Pair of “Laila” Armchairs by Ilmari Lappalainen for Asko, Finland, 1948
By Ilmari Lappalainen, Asko
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Laila” model by the Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. This pair of “nr. 238” armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushion and back with tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930 the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. After the war, the damage it caused and the new homes of Karelian migrants concentrated production on essential furniture, which the Finnish Ministry of Public Affairs ordered to sell at an affordable price. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s Laila...

Poeme Shelf 74 in Dark Oak by Poiat

Graceful and poetic, yet robust, is its designers' description what the Poeme Shelf is all about. Designed by the Poiat Studio's co-founders, Timo Mikkonen and Antti Rouhunkoski, the shelf derives its influences from many different aspects and sources. The initial inspiration for the more rugged side of the Poeme took off from the old Finnish wooden tools and the aesthetics of Japanese architecture. But as the design process drew to a close, the final outcome was also delicate and gentle, giving it its name of French origin. The free-standing and modular structure enables the Poeme to serve as a bookshelf, a media console or a display cabinet. Featuring a modular and minimal design, the Poeme Shelves...
