Midcentury Candle Chandelier, Erik Höglund, Boda, Sweden, 1960s
By Boda, Erik Höglund
Located in Stockholm, SE
Stunning, oversized candle chandelier by Erik Höglund, made from wrought iron and glass. The long, rustic iron frame is adorned with different sized glass medallions that look like large rain drops on a bare tree. The biggest medallions are embossed with patterns of fish.
Height 190 + 37 cm.
Erik Höglund was one of Sweden’s foremost glass artists, whose innovative designs and glass making techniques revolutionized the scene of both art glass and serve ware in the 1950s. His bold and personal designs gave him and the glassworks Boda worldwide acclaim. Erik Höglund is considered the most influential Swedish glass artist of the 1950s and 1960s, alongside Ingeborg Lundin.
Höglund was admitted to the prestigious school Konstfack at the age of 16, first studying to become an art teacher, but later changing to the sculptor’s line. He rebelled against many of what he considered to be conventional ideas at the school, and was almost expelled. His nonconformism would follow him through his career, aiding him in following his own path and repeatedly breaking new ground.
Erik Höglund started working at Boda glassworks in 1953. At the time, Boda focused on producing high-quality serve ware in ethereal, cut-glass designs under the direction of Fritz Kallenberg. Höglund brought new perspectives and ideas, experimenting with the glass mass to give it a bubbly look and introducing colored glass and irregular finishes. These ideas were in direct opposition to the traditional ideas of what quality glass is, and Höglund was initially met with skepticism. He created rustic designs that allowed for everyday, multiple uses of glass, allowing it to be both functional and aesthetic. This down-to-earth idea appealed to both critics and collectors, although it took some years into the 1950s to win over the general public. In 1955, Erik Höglund’s glass was presented at the H55 Exhibition and one of his vases, whilst considered scandalous due to its suggestive decor, was purchased by the Swedish king. In 1957 he was awarded the Lunning Prize, its until then youngest awardee. Following that, his glass was exhibited in the Georg Jensen store on 5th Avenue in New York, making Erik Höglund and Boda world renowned.
Erik Höglund was a master of all artistic trades. His glass murals were an important part of his artistic deed, leading to many assignments of public decorations, around Sweden in churches, schools, banks and other public places, as well as in the United States and Australia. In the early 1960s he also started working with wrought iron, making chandeliers and candelabras, combined with glass or unadorned, that became hugely popular. Boda opened its own smithy, Boda Smide, to satisfy the demand. Höglund also worked with wood, creating rustic and playful children’s furniture, candle holders and beds.
Höglund left Boda in 1973 and worked with public assignments, often in collaboration with architects and his wife Ingrid Höglund. He continued to work with glass throughout the years for Pukeberg, Lindshammar and Strömbergshyttan glass works. He was was an incredibly productive artist, creating 150 public works from 1956 into the 1990s. Life cycles, sports and acrobatics, everyday life and family relationships were recurring sources of inspiration. Among his most notable work is the decoration of Johannelund Church in Linköping, which consisted of murals, glass sections, furnishing and the church silver...

Art Deco Orrefors Mirror from Swedish Oceanliner
By Orrefors
Located in New York, US
Our etched glass mirror designed by Simon Gate (1883-1945) for Orrefors is one of two mirrors commissioned for the Swedish oceanliner, M/S Kungsholm, which took its maiden voyage in 1929. It has a rectangular shaped metal frame bordered by 28 shaped glass plaques with double welt caming etched with nude figures, mermaids, tridents and dolphins. Signed in lower right ORREFORS S. GATE 1928. This is one of two mirrors that hung in the vestibule connecting the first-class main lounge and the music room. The whereabouts of the other mirror is not known.
The M/S Kungsholm was built in 1928 and had her inaugural voyage when she sailed to the Caribbean for the Swedish American Lines in 1929. The Kungsholm was not the largest of ships, but it was designed and decorated as a showcase for luxurious Art Deco design by the finest of Sweden's artists.
Notably, this is one of a very few number of decorative objects from the ship that have survived following its seizure by the U.S. in 1941 for the transport of troops in WWII. The interior of the ship was designed by Carl Bergsten to showcase the very best of Swedish fine and decorative arts to the world. For more information, we invite you to read the lot essay from the Christie's sale in 1991 which included the mirror in lot 248.

Dish Designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane for Rörstrand, Sweden, 1960s
By Carl-Harry Stålhane
Located in Stockholm, SE
Dish designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane for Rörstrand,
Sweden. 1960s.
Stoneware.
Signed.
Measurements:
H: 6 cm / 2 1/4"
Diameter: 18.5 cm / 7 1/4".
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920-1990) was born in the town of Mariestad, in the west of Sweden. As a child, he dreamed of being a successful painter. He started working for Rorstrand in neighboring Lidkoping at the age of 18. Initially, he decorated ceramic wares as assistant for the leading artist Gunnar Nylund. Carl-Harry decorated Rorstrand’s exclusive Flambé range as well as producing idyllic floral designs.
In the mid 1940s, Carl-Harry Stålhane began to develop his own stoneware. He had his first solo exhibition in 1948, impressing the public with an ability to work in most contemporary styles of stoneware. But after studying in Paris in the late 1940s, Carl-Harry found a style that was truly his own. Inspired by the hunger for new products to meet the post-war economic boom, he developed from being a gifted decorator to a first-rate ceramic artist. He was praised for his "column-like, slender-necked stoneware vases with their peach surfaces", as one magazine put it. Spurred on by a deep love of the ceramic wares of the Far East, Carl-Harry liberated himself from the European tradition of ceramics, finding inspiration in foreign cultures, in Picasso and in constructivist art.
The 1950s brought major successes: a diploma and a gold medal at Milan Triennials as well as solo exhibitions in Sweden, the UK and the USA. Carl-Harry commenced his career as an industrial designer in 1954. His Blanca tableware — in elegant white porcelain — was much in demand and gained him international prizes. He designed almost everything from numerous table sets decorations to rustic ashtrays.
Carl-Harry Stålhane’s production of unique ceramic works of art increased notably in the late 1950s. In 1960 he reached something of a peak with an exhibition at Galerie Blanche in Stockholm. The exhibition showed robustly dark wares that were hailed as the new ceramics...
