Missoni Italian Midcentury Carpet from Ythe 80's

About the Item

Original carpet from the Missoni Casa collection which in the eighties was produced by T&J Vestor which is now based in the factories of Golasecca (Varese) on the banks of the Ticino, where it was founded in 1921. In 1983, textile products made under license from the Missoni Home line were introduced. and this is one of the most traditional designs, the colors and the floral motif are a gamble of combinations in the never banal style of the Italian Mason. The large rug is made with hand / machine technique in pure wool. n 1960 Missoni clothes began to appear in fashion magazines. In 1962 Ottavio and his wife began to use the Rachel sewing machine, which had been created for making shawls, to create clothes that were colorful and light. This innovation decreed the commercial success of the line. Anna Piaggi, the famous fashion journalist with undisputed talent-scouting skills, notices Ottavio and Rosita Missoni's creations. She will follow them with growing interest, season after season. In 1966 the first fashion show takes place at the Teatro Gerolamo in Milan: it is a great success. A year later in April, Ottavio and Rosita are featured for the first time at the Pitti Palace in Florence. Rosita, just before the models go out on the catwalk, notices that they are not wearing underwear of the proper color and makes them take it off. Under the spotlight, the knitted garments become transparent. However, the idea is not understood and the following year, just as Yves Saint Laurent in Paris is launching his famous nude look, the Missonis are no longer invited to the Pitti. They present their collection at the Solari Pool, with a memorable aquatic fashion show. In the same year they took their creations to Paris and were successful there as well. In April 1969 the U.S. magazine Woman's Wear Daily devotes its opening page to Missoni, and the following year the Bloomingdale's department store in New York opens a Missoni boutique inside their large building. It is the first in the United States. In April Ottavio and Rosita successfully present in Florence a collection that defines a new graphic interpretation of women's and men's clothing. This is the new style that Americans would later christen "put together." In 1971 Ottavio presents a collection with the famous "patchworks" in Cortina, and newspapers begin to compare his color compositions to works of contemporary art. The house collaborates in these years with textile artists such as Kaffe Fassett. In September 1973 the Missonis receive the prestigious Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in Dallas, the equivalent of the Academy Award in the field of fashion. The following year the Missonis left Florence and the Pitti and decided to present their collections in Milan. In 1975 Renato Cardazzo organizes a solo exhibition for Ottavio at Il Naviglio Gallery in Venice: his fabrics are put on display as paintings. In 1976 the first boutique was opened in Milan, and in 1979 the Lombard capital awarded Ottavio the gold medal for civil valor. It is only the first in a long series of awards, national and international. In 1983, Missoni made the stage costumes for that year's La Scala premiere of Lucia di Lammermoor. In the same year he was awarded the San Giusto d'Oro prize by the Friuli Venezia Giulia chroniclers, and in 1986 he was given the honor of Commendatore della Repubblica. In October 1987 a Missoni version of the Autobianchi Y10 was created, based on the Fire LX model. It differs from the other models in that it has an exclusive metallic Blu Memphis color, a designer-designed color matching interior and velvet seat fabric; electric windows and central locking are standard equipment. Outside, to recognize the car, there is a "Missoni" sticker on the rear sides. Ottavio Missoni participated in one of the many commercials advertising the Y10 in those years with the slogan "Y10. People like it." Characteristic of Missoni is that he does not take himself or his craft too seriously. A classic saying of his is, "to dress badly you don't need to follow fashion, but it helps." Missoni has never talked about his colleagues: on the Chiambretti Night show he said, "Don't ask me about fashion, I don't know anything about it, nor about my colleagues, I don't know them well, I just say hello." And about his clothes, "I don't buy designer clothes, I wear what I like. When I was invited to the Quirinal I needed a smokin. Since I don't make that stuff, I went into Armani and bought one."
