19th Century Red and Yellow Wool Mina-Khani Shirwan Caucasian Rug, circa 1890s

About the Item

Shirwan in the measure sejadeh of the end of the 19th century. The Shirwan are carpets knotted in a vast area in the South-East of the Caucasus. Here, unlike the other areas of the Caucasus, the carpets were knotted completely in wool for commercial purposes only, in a remarkable variety of designs and colors. Our specimen has a particular design inspired by the Mina-khani motif of Persian origin, which is characterized by flowers arranged in groups in a superimposed pattern that occupies the entire central field. The border, on the other hand, shows the typical motifs of Caucasian production and is particularly important because it is made up of seven small borders, which are overlaid. A clear reference to the seven heavens created by Allah, as described in the Qur'an. This design gives those who lie in the center, great protection and serenity.
