3.5x5.3 ft Antique Caucasian Karagashli Shirvan Rug, Ca 1880

About the Item

An antique Karagashli rug from the 19th century with a visually stunning and engaging design that feature multiple medallions in deep navy blue in the form of stepped diamonds that contain split palmettes with angular floral sprigs springing from them against a field in deep tomato red decorated with very prominent pairs of angular calyx motifs in cream as well as motifs of floating stars, angular flowers and hooks in saffron yellow, cobalt blue and cream. The inner and outer borders along with their inner and outer bands are very intricately detailed. The multi chromatic and diagonal running water motif in red, blue, yellow and cream charges the entire design with incredible dynamism and the outer border with its dainty carnations gives off a softer sense of finish. The rug is hand-knotted with even medium wool pile on wool foundation. It has a supple weave and made with all natural dyes that develop an even better patina with age. This handsome accent piece with all organic dyes have that famous "Arminian red" field with dyes extracted from the pomegranate skin.
