Antique Caucasian Perpedil Kuba Runner, Circa 1890

About the Item

Extremely rare, Perpedil, Kuba district this rug is hand woven in Eastern Caucasus. This tightly woven rug contains nine ram's horns (wurma) in the center of the deep indigo-blue field separated by beautiful red flowers. Four animals frame each wurma-the bushy tails might indicate wolves. Pointing inwards on each side of the blue field are eight wurmas in a sword shape. The main border contains a finely worked ' Kufic' chain. This Caucasian rug is famed for its beauty ,the harmony of colors and richness of its pure, radiant and natural dyes. Most important amongst these natural dyes are highly prized "Armenian red", extracted from flowers, roots, leaves and fruits-rinds. Yellow tints were obtained from adonis and fig leaves; the pea-green and ivory from onion and apple skins; oak-brown from nutshells and mid-blue through to sky blue from indigo. This fabulous carpet is a fantastic example of splendid woven art of the Caucasus mountains.
