About the Item
Distinguished by a small, square format, sofrehs are utilitarian textiles employed when presenting food to guests. Each tribe and village has recognisable traits in their sofreh weavings, be it colour, design, texture or more often a combination of all of these. The sofreh from Kamo, a village located not far from Isfahan, are probably the most dazzling in their array of abstract patterns and bold colour juxtapositions.
The flame-like pattern that graces this Kamo sofreh testifies its Zoroastrian legacy. Although it is quite characteristic for the group, we rarely encounter it rendered with such raw primitiveness. Here the weaver adopted only natural, undyed wool with the exception of a narrow horizontal line, in pistachio green, connecting the opposite indentations around the centre of the field. The scattered use of very fine eccentric wefts in dark brown emphasise the sculptural quality of the composition.
This piece is published in our online exhibition entitled 'From Eurasia with Love - Antique Tribal Textile Art from Persia and the Transcaucasus'.
