Early and Rare Antique White Ground Kuba Chi-Chi Caucasian Rug

About the Item

Using a rare and highly successful white field, this exceptional Caucasian rug from eastern Azerbaijan draws rows of ornament associated both with the Chi-Chi subgroup as well as with examples originating from the northern region of Daghestan. Of particular interest is an iconic cruciform element formed from negative space. The rich polychromy is characteristic of the earlier vintage, glistening against the white background like encrusted jewels. Of particular merit is the abundant use of the aubergine (eggplant purple) colour, which distinguishes the most antique weavings, as well as the replacement of the more typical geometric Chi-Chi border with a stunning, emerald green ground pseudo-Kufic variant drawn by employing a deeply saturated madder red dye. A truly outstanding Caucasian rug worthy of the best collections worldwide.
