Fine Vintage Room Size Blue Ground Caucasian Shirvan Rug with All-Over Pattern
About the Item
The last quarter of the 20th century has witnessed the revival of many of the most representative types of antique oriental rugs. The government of Russian Azerbaijan initiated a series of weavings with designs based on those from the 18th and 19th century, such as this elegant blue ground Shirvan carpet, decorated by a pattern consisting of parallel and offset rows of directionally arranged stylised trees and palmettes. This specific pattern is taken from that of a celebrated early example published in Ulrich Schurmann's 'Caucasian Rugs', which is considered still today as the fundamental text on this family of weavings. The all-over pattern has been reconfigured in order to fit this size, which is more useful in todays' home decor.
