Swedish Rya Rug in Geometric Pattern of Red Orange and Black
By Dania Taepper
Located in Ferndale, MI
Deep dense 100% wool shag pile square rya rug produced in Denmark circa 1965 by Dania Taepper in a geometric collage of contrasting reds and black. Measures: 90" x 90". Rya or rye is a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches. Made using a form of the Ghiordes knot to make the double-sided pile fabric. Though rya means "rug" in English, the original meaning in Sweden of rya was a bed cover with a knotted pile. The first ryas originated in the early fifteenth century as coarse, long-piled, heavy covers used by mariners instead of furs. As time went on the rugs became more bright and colorful. Now very much a part of mid century interior design.

Antique Caucasian Soumak Rug
Located in New York, NY
Ancient protection symbols and esoteric devices decorate this beautifully executed antique Soumak rug. The elaborately detailed field features a triad of hexagonal medallions filled with coffered trousseau boxes and a multitude of small-scale symbols. Handsome eight-pointed stars paired with tiny S-hooks, rosettes and endless knots fill the warm terra-cotta field that surrounds the central medallion figures. The lively symbolic theme and exuberant decorations continue in the richly detailed borders and strapwork guardbands. Auspicious eight-pointed stars and unusual hooked-arm motifs punctuate the formal main borders, which complement the symbolic decorations and robust oxidized colors that are featured in the field. This extraordinary antique Caucasian Soumak rug...
