Rare Caucasian sumak technique runner

About the Item

This crisp Sumak runner was woven in the villages of the southern Caucasus about 125 years ago. A column of rams-horn traced diamond medallions is drawn on a yellow ground. While yellow ground Sumak rugs are certainly known, yellow is more rare than the red or blue varieties. The composition is balanced by several layers of smaller and larger borders, the inner most using a tile mosaic pattern and the outer with what may be juxtaposed abstracted birds.

Kuba rugs designated as Seichor, are known for their distinctive vibrant palette, with prominent medium blues, scarlet reds and accents in pink and gold. Stylistically, these pieces often reflect the European and particularly French taste of the late nineteenth century and this can be seen in the almost Rococo articulation of the lattice and palmettes drawn in this rug. This piece, however, is well grounded within the weaving traditions of the Caucasus. Ultimately, it is a small, highly stylized rendition of the classical Caucasian “Dragon Carpets...
