Regal blue antique Caucasian Karabagh carpet, circa 1900. The weavers of the Causcasas Mountain Range were nestled away from the global and historical influences of the Persian rug trade Antique Karabagh carpets tend to feature floral designs upon sparsely decorated fields, and their patterns often become very geometric in representing the mountainous natural world, which is fitting considering their emphasis on rich and varied dye color likewise requires its own re-interpretation of local seeds, insects, roots and petals. In the creation of art and meaning, what Karabagh carpets lack in clear imagery, they make up for in enduring dyes to bear the burden of our curious eyes. Karabagh woven by Armenian in folkloric land fought over in present day Azerbaijan. The work Kara bagh literally translates to black gardern in Armenian. As another tribal weaving culture of antiquity, the “Greater Konya” are sometimes regarded as the older and less common Turkish counterpart to the Persian Caucasian Kazakhs. This is because these nomadic cultures, the Konya and the Caucasians, both produce rugs with lustrous, loosely-knotted wool, maintaining their traditions uninterrupted due to geographical isolation, using earthy dyes like brown, red, terracotta, and yellow (though Konya rugs are much more sparse with use and variety of dying), and geometric designs instead of curvilinear. Balance of color is essential in this and all Karabagh carpets. It is achieved here not by shading, but rather through contrast. See how the juxtaposition between the blue, red, and white is managed in this piece; the blue of the field is the background, but through the sparsity of the Karabagh's design, it dominates the carpet and, so wreathed as it is by the rich red of the border and the notched white diamond, we are left with the impression that we gaze downward into a still dark pool upon which floats the beautiful and bright medallion of flowers. The bold, bursting reds, blues, greens, and yellows would seem garish in any other type of carpet, but the Karabagh design pairs the wool’s total saturation within the dye with a light-handed and interpretive approach to geometric imagery which entrances the eye and admirerer both.
