Antique Ersari Carpet, c. 1900
About the Item
The Ersari tribe of Central Asia, residing in Southern Turkmenistan and Northern Afghanistan, have a long and rich history in the world of antique rugs. Their weavings are widely appreciated for their quality, rich palettes, and their distinctive stamped ‘elephant’s foot’ patterns, making them charming, durable pieces.
This wonderful antique Ersari carpet is a fine example of its type, with high-grade wool and a fine weave, giving a crisp clarity to its drawing. Being an early piece, it not only has better quality wool, but its pattern is simpler and more naive, relative to later examples, and the vegetable dyes used have taken on a beautiful age-related patina, lending a natural colour variation (abrash) to its muted terracotta field, adding a real sense of depth and great richness to the simple drawing, framed by several creative borders.
It is in excellent condition, still retaining all its four borders and its original kilim fringes are intact at both ends, rare features for a rug dating c.1900.
A great statement piece to complement a variety of interior styles.

They are best known for their distinctive weaving style, in a region where most rugs produced by their neighbouring tribes can be recognised by their so-called elephant foot pattern and deep blues and reds. This 19th-century example features a pomegranate blossom motif, inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th Century, symbolising prosperity, longevity and fertility, with a muted aubergine grey field and a variety of earthy, vegetable-dyed colours in its design. Its weaving has a precision and clarity uncommon in carpets of its type - truly a carpet of one-of-a-kind craftsmanship and artistry. This Beshir carpet...Category
