About the Item

Hand knotted in wool originating from East Turkestan circa 1890-1900, this antique rug connotes a classic Khotan rug design with a classic approach to transitional colorway celebrated in this oriental rug family. This piece was selected in no small part for its collectibility, enjoying a rare departure from the traditional Khotan medallion pattern for an entirely distinct field background in meticulous detail, the curvatures of which bring the play of gray-blue, red, and golden-yellow to life with a sense of movement both unique and classic. The prevalence of varied geometry and tasteful colorway accents like that of the green in the borders connote a subtle European influence, likely remarking the progressive cultural diffusion of the market as it influenced rarities like that of this spacious, almost gallery sized rug.
