Antique Khotan Transitional Red and Beige Wool Rug by Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Originating from East Turkestan between 1900-1920, this antique transitional Khotan rug has a lesser known, once-acclaimed field design. Handwoven in durable, high quality wool, the central medallion depicts an ornate eight-pointed star, a traditional multi-cultural symbol of heaven, warding spirits, and divinity. Depicted in light beige and sharp black against a rustic red background, the geometric sharpness of the medallion is mirrored by the remarkably stylized Buddhist spandrels in the field corners, while the background is complemented by the fretwork and cloud band borders.

  • Mid Century Khotan Transitional Pink and Beige Wool Rug by Rug & Kilim
Located in Long Island City, NY
Originating from East Turkestan in (year), this mid century transitional Khotan rug from Rug & Kilim features a finely woven, uncommonly repetitious all over field design. Hand woven in high quality wool, a unique contrast is employed between the non-outlined pink field symbols and the richly outlined depictions throughout the borders, likely intended to highlight the important regional symbolism in the center. The field celebrates continuously drawn pomegranates on branches with seedlings (important Khotan symbols of fertility and bounty) against the beige and earthen brown border, strongly resembling a harvest field. The multiple borders also wrap continuously around the field, but feature an assortment of eastern symbols such as royal Chinese...
