Midcentury Samarkand red handmade wool rug Size: 7'0" × 13'6" (213 × 411 cm) Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia whose Sogdian name translates as “Stone Fort” or Rock Town”. Although its name may sound a bit rough, Samarkand weaving center is a crib of the unique, eclectic and utterly graceful antique rug designs that have been developing for centuries to finally reach perfection. The vintage round rug before your eyes shows the incredible diversity and joyful appeal of Samarkand boho creations. When looking at it, first thing that grabs attention is the bold and uncompromising color palette based on deep carmine prevailing in the main field and the main border, complemented with equally compelling sapphire, orange, ivory and black shades residing in secondary borders and the details of the pattern. The design is extremely varied and comprises of numerous weaving influences from different cultural circles, including Indian, Persian, Chinese and Turkish. The Samarkand Khotan rugs central part is filled with a repetitive yet complex pattern of geometric medallions linked by vinery with flower-head and angular foliage motifs. The series of borders exhibits further ornaments maintained in the character of the main field. This mesmerizing composition was masterfully hand knotted of the finest wool in accordance with old and refined weaving techniques by a skilled artisan. Such thorough making has ensured the rug’s quality and enabled it to survive until this day without any signs of wear.
