Early 20th Century Antique Khotan Hand Knotted Wool Rug, with Pink Abrash, 1910

About the Item

Antique Khotan hand knotted wool rug, 110 years old, circa 1910. Measures: 5.8 x 10.9.5” (roughly 6' x 11') This spectacular piece has varying hues from bold pink to blush to subtle sage. There is a color change in the center of the piece adding to the allure! This color change is no mistake, but a part of the artistry. The wool was dyed in small batch vegetable and insect dyes. These rugs took months and months to create - around halfway through the dye batch changed resulting in an alternate color on one side! There are a few patches in this piece, see photo closeups for more detail. I love the character that these patches add. One patch adds a touch of different fringe to the edge! Produced in Khotan, an area situated along the silk trade route in the southern region of Xinjiang. Produced in the city of Khotan which is Located in Eastern Turkestan. Antique Khotan rugs have the collectibility and investment value of Persian rugs and combine Chinese and Tibetan design influence as well as Persian and Turkish design influence. .

8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...

8’3 x 12’1** I love how the corners on this all over pattern frame in the navy field. Take a look at the finger or comb-like pattern that divides the corners from the field. Lovely! This rug is not an exact rectangle- it ranges from 11’6-12’1 long x 8’1-8’3 wide. It has so much character for a handmade piece! It’s not uncommon for these handmade masterpieces to vary in shape and size in this way - it’s a nod to the artistry and the talented hands that so carefully wove it. The wool pile is low and even. **The size ranges from 11’6-12’1 long x 8’1-8’3 wide The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level.
