Antique Persian Bakhtiari Tribal Rug with Florals, Trees, Birds

About the Item

This is an Antique Persian Bahktiari carpet with a beautiful low pile, fine knotting. In wonderful condition with a few areas of wear (see closeups). There are a few spots where the pile has worn down to the foundation, but the foundation is strong and intact. I think these areas add so much character to this lovely piece! The borders are a bit irregularly shaped, which is my favorite aspect of this piece! Here you can truly envision the weaver as she "confronted with the limits and the potential of her medium, improvising a corner here, adjusting the height... there..." -- a quote from Walter B Denny's "How to read Islamic Carpets" Colors: Red, purple, light blue, baby blue, indigo, navy, bright blue, dark blue, orange, green, pink, blush, coral, antique rose

  • Antique Persian Mahal rug with Ivory, Pink, All-Over Pattern, hand knotted wool
    Located in Birmingham, AL
8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...

  • Vintage Persian Malayer Rug with an All Over Pattern and Black Wool Border
    Located in Birmingham, AL
7’3 x 10’4 The rich black wool on the border of this stunning Malayer is such a rare find! I love the portion of abrash that appears through the center of the rug. Abrash is the subtle color change you notice in the wool. This is due to small batch plant, vegetable, floral (and even insect!) dyes being dyed in small batches and varying a bit one to the next. This rug is in excellent vintage condition, low even pile. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level.
