Antique Persian Serapi, circa 1880s

About the Item

10'10.5" x 15'2" A spectacular Antique Persian Serapi with an oversized medallion. The term Serapi is used to distinguish the finest antique rugs that were handmade in the Heriz district in Northwest Persia in the lat 19th Century. The quality and large scale design of these pieces is unmatched. This piece has a sought after rust/red classic color and indigo with wonderful abrash (subtle color change in the wool due to small batch plant and vegetable dying). The ends have been expertly repaired (see photo of the back corner of the rug). The texture on this rug is low pile. The ends are slightly uneven lengths (see photos). Over all this piece is in stunning condition for being 140 years old.

  • Antique Persian Mahal rug with Ivory, Pink, All-Over Pattern, hand knotted wool

8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...
