Vivid Chinese Turkestan Yarkand Rug

About the Item

Woven in the oasis city of Yarkand in Chinese Turkestan in the first decades of the 20th century, this rug is characteristic of a generation of weavings that experimented with bright bold colors, large-scale graphics and a new geometric sensibility towards traditional local and Chinese motifs from further east that seems to almost anticipate Art Deco.

  • Stunning Early 20th Century Khotan Rug from East Turkestan
    Located in San Francisco, CA
Situated along the ancient Silk Roads running between China and Central Asia, Khotan is an oasis city in the region of East Turkestan in what is now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region in northwest China. Reflecting the geography in which it was woven, this piece blends elements of Central Asian and Chinese design. A central medallion is drawn in the center of an abstract field which actively combines a host of well-spaced floating motifs. Butterflies, shrubs and smaller floral forms are drawn spaciously spanning the area surrounding the medallion and in between two planted pots on either end of the field. Two borders derived from Chinese traditions frame the composition. With their pleasing light palette and spacious drawing, Khotan weavings...

  • Early 20th Century Light Chinese Khotan Carpet
    Located in San Francisco, CA
Khotan, an oasis city in the Xinjiang autonomous region of Western China, is situated much closer to the republics of Central Asia than Beijing. Cultural and historic ties to Central Asia give the weaving of this region its own distinct flavor, mixed with later infusions from China. This Khotan carpet from the turn of the century draws an all-over pattern reminiscent of Ming textiles of the 16th and 17th centuries. The repeat rosette ornament is a local form replacing the more typical lotus blossoms found in stricter Chinese variations, but the layout of design, including the fret pattern framing each rosette and the interlocking designs of the border, are quintessentially Chinese. Khotan weaving...
