19th Century Ningxia Saddle Cover with Auspicious Symbol Border in Indigo Blue

About the Item

A beautiful Ningxia saddle cover from the western China circa the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The antique saddle cover is in wonderful condition for an item being over one hundred years of age and used. The design in the indio blue field consists of two circular medallions on either side of two pairs of leather holders within an auspicious symbol border. The saddle cover has a cloth backing that has the impressions of the saddle which gives one the chance to imagine the places it has been over a century. Ningxia is a ‘wool town’ in north-central China, bordering Gansu and Inner Mongolia. It is a beautiful item as a wall decoration.     A beautiful Chinese Peking oversized rug from the late 1800s. The rug has a very unique and beautiful pale yellow color with an open design. The design in the field consists of a large medallion with lion dogs surrounded by cloud wreaths. The rug has a very similar design to a Ningxia rug. Ningxia is a ‘wool town’ in north-central China, bordering Gansu and Inner Mongolia. Carpets have been made there since at least the early 17th century for local sale and for use in mandarin and aristocratic houses in China proper.     Ningxia Pillar rug, XIX century. This special hand knotted carpet was wrapped around a pillar or a column of the buddhis temples or in the imperial palaces in China, Mongolia and Tibet ( in Tibet they were called Katum). This carpet surrounds the column creating a refined optical effect . This item brings in its decoration, a very important pattern of the imperial Chinese culture. Starting from the bottom, we can appreciate the proportion and the balance of the so called “Rainbow border”, consisting of parallel wavy stripes in a soft lovely combination of colors, radiating from the edge of the field. This kind of border was used only at the bottom of the rug in conjunction with the “sacred mountain” motif. The center of this pillar carpet is decorated with two opposite dragons linked by a bold “ruyi cloud” (in Chinese Ruyi means “as you wish”).
