Ningxia Dragon rug five claws, 19th century.
Beijing in the Forbidden City of Ningxia !!
Dragon pillar rug are used to decorate pillars in Buddhist temples and palaces. Rugs where secured to the wooden columns by ropes and assumed a continuous ascending spiral form.
These rug were graphic visual representations for mostly illiterate worshippers, assuming a didactic role in much the same way that stained glass windows and sculptural porticos did in western cathedrals.
Carpet with a single confronting dragon having a segmented body on embodies the typical Ningxia style.
