21st Century Customizable Red and Yellow Tiger Tibetan Prayer Rug , 2019

About the Item

Tiger rug cm. 180 x 90 new production Nepalese rug, knotted with hand-spun wool with Tibetan knot. The background is a brilliant red and the tiger depicted has its back richly decorated in the traditional yellow of the fur of these felines. The face expresses strength but at the same time is alive and full of joy. The subject is inspired by Tibetan-produced meditation rugs: Tantra says: be like a tiger! The tiger advances without fear in life with spontaneous pride and majesty, is connected to its roots and in love with life. Trust in existence, the pleasure it feels in living and the power of its breath are its strength.

Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. The tiger pelt became a symbol of high rank in Tibet, employed almost exclusively on weavings which belonged to the religious as well as secular upper class. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...
