About the Item

This antique Khaden smaller runner rug is remarkable for its fantastic orange field and expressive design. Two phoenix and two dragons balance one another out on either side. In Tibetan and Chinese mythology, the dragon and phoenix are frequently portrayed in a timeless, harmonious dance, symbolizing the ideal balance of yin and yang. The dragon embodies masculinity, with its power and strength, while the phoenix represents femininity, embodying grace and beauty. Together, they symbolize the harmonious unity of opposing forces. The border features Tibetan clouds and water symbols on all four sides, which is quite unusual. This rug is made of very soft wool -- so soft it may have been made using lambs wool because it is so silky soft. It is in excellent condition given its age. It was hand knotted in Tibet, likely using all vegetable dyes, in the early 20th century, circa 1900-1920. This antique rug comes from Joseph Carini's Private Reserve Collection. On his travels around the world, Carini has curated a collection of fine and rare vintage textiles and rugs. He is enamored by ancient techniques, natural dyes, and cultural symbology. It would make a fabulous throw rug at the foot of a bed, or as a perfect versatile accessory bringing grounding color and pattern into any room. Carini’s design philosophy is heavily influenced by historical contexts and nature, merging his graphic and organic design interests with his considerable knowledge of decorative arts, architecture, and industrial design history. His expertise in exotic natural dyes and hand-processed materials has become a cornerstone of his work. Joseph Carini is known for his innovative approach, constantly experimenting with design concepts and natural materials. He works closely with designers and clients, offering his expertise to help realize their visions while ensuring practical and aesthetic success. His emphasis on quality and longevity means that each carpet is crafted to last a lifetime, using the most environmentally friendly dyes and processes. Since founding Carini in 1997, Joseph Carini has worked with diverse clients, from A-list celebrities to high-end projects. His creations appeal to design aficionados and art collectors who value unique, authentic pieces. Carini’s rugs are more than just decorative items; they are canvases imbued with intention, positive energy, and a soul that brings warmth and life to any space.
