Antique Tibetan Tiger Rug in Red with Black Animal Print, from Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool, originating from Tibet, circa 1920-1930, this 2x4 antique Tibetan Tiger rug features all over geometric patterns in form of minimalistic animal prints inspired by tiger stripes. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will note the special place tiger-skin rugs hold in the history of Oriental rugs, and especially Tibetan rugs—holding a deep cultural and spiritual significance as they do in many provenances. Our collection spans several cultures and recaptures iconic pictorial styles in folk art and handmade Oriental rugs alike. In this piece, rich red underscores rows of black geometric patterns—a minimalistic animal print inspired by tiger stripes, executed in the all over style. Keen eyes will further note that this piece is made of several long columns, combined into a larger rug—visible in the stitching between each two of the four panels—a time-honored practice usually signifying tribal weavers or the folk art of a smaller loom. Condition: This antique rug is in good condition, with minimal wear consistent with age and some visible distress in the field. Still ready for the floor.

Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...
