Authentic Chinese handmade silk rug. Size: 8'10" x 11'4" (269 x 345 cm) This awe-inspiring rug comes from the golden period for Chinese rug industry marked by thriving business activities of Walter Nichols. The first half of the 20th century was a turning point for Chinese weavings. It was then they have transformed from utterly traditional to more contemporary by absorbing western influences, Art Deco among others. The graceful antique Chinese rug before your eyes is a paragon of the aesthetics of its time. It carries a mesmerizing dragon in the clouds design that derives from the centuries-old Far-Asian tradition. The dragon is an important astrological symbol in the eastern zodiac and is considered the most powerful. This mystical creature celebrated in legends is the only mythical animal featured in the eastern zodiac. Dragons are powerful, benevolent creatures that guard the Tree of Life, protect the pearls of wisdom and harness the power of all earthly and celestial elements. They are also harbingers of good fortune, which makes the Year of the Dragon particularly auspicious. The modern touch lies in the relative scarcity of the motifs – the rug looks like a painting with the dragon and clouds presented on a plain, Living Coral background. Its qualitative body was carefully hand knotted of the finest silk which resulted in the antique rug being soft and durable. Although made nearly a hundred years ago, this recherché beauty looks like it just came out from the hands of the artisan. Under proper maintenance, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear.
