Fine Ningxia Rug, c. 1900s

About the Item

The Ningxia region, located near the Mongolian border, boasts one of the most ancient and venerable weaving traditions in all of China, well-known for creating some of the nations most desirable rugs and carpets since at least the 18th Century - these pieces are recognisable for their understated palettes, quiet formality, and high quality weaves. This c. 1900 example features a 'cloudband' pattern in the central field, worked in tones of cornflower blue over a soft champagne colour ground, and well framed by a wide, simple border. An elegant, restrained composition, complimented by the muted terracotta accents in the drawing. Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders well preserved on all sides. Its dyes have taken on a subtle patina with age, lending the rug a sense of understated grace. A charming rug, to suit a stylish interior.

  • Fine Early 20th Century Tibetan Carpet
    Located in London, GB
A unique and elegant Tibetan carpet in a rare room-size format - likely commissioned at the time for a member of the nobility, as most Tibetan pieces of the period were woven in a small rug format. The blue field provides a great contrast to the striking design, with each drawing in the central field is creatively repeated in various colour compositions, is framed by a simple red border. The charming array of hues in the palette are all vegetable-dyed. Rug weaving in Tibet stretches back hundreds if not thousands of years, though experienced a real renaissance in the early 20th Century, brought by the greater access to rich dyes, and a greater diversity in these carpets designs, combining traditional Tibetan motifs with elements borrowed from Chinese weavings...
