Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This elegant 1930s example features a simple floral composition over an open field, and a wonderful, earthy range of colours, with tones of muted chocolate brown, sage green, ivory, and aubergine grey - a refined, understated palette.
A beautiful piece, in excellent condition, to complement either a contemporary or a classic interior.
