Very Large c. 1890 Peking Carpet

About the Item

Chinese carpets and textiles have a rich history of weaving, dating back many centuries, particularly in the northern region of Ningxia. As these pieces began to catch the eye of the US and European markets, around the turn of the 20th Century, the weaving centers moved to the capital, then known as Peking, which enabled the creation of finer, grand-scale pieces.  The designs became simpler, and more asymmetrical, tending more toward modern Western furnishing tastes. This grand-scale early example features a dragon motif in cornflower blue, over an open field, with a charming ton-sur-ton effect in the design, working in tones of champagne and muted hazelnut, and well framed by a wide, decorative border. Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with a charming, age-related patina. A truly impressive carpet, rare in this large format, to suit a stylish interior.

During the decades preceding the World War II, several international firms wove rugs in China for the export market. These carpets were generally executed in the Art Deco style of the era and incorporated elements of ‘chinoiserie’ in an array of vibrant colors rather than in traditional Chinese designs, layout, and palette. This bold Chinese carpet is thus a bit of an outlier. Using a classic Chinese blue and ivory palette with a touch of green, bold vegetal tendrils in the style of imperial Ming...
