Vintage Chinese Peking Chinoiserie Style Rug

About the Item

77211, Vintage Chinese Peking Chinoiserie Style Rug. This hand knotted wool vintage Chinese style rug features a rounded open centre medallion comprised of interlaced peony blossoms and vinery. Floral motifs including plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, lotuses and peonies float in the field surrounding the medallion. Together, these four flowers represent the Four Seasons and cycle of life. Additional large lotuses, surrounded by lovely scrolling greenery, emanate from the corners. The attractive main border features many Buddhist and other traditional Chinese symbols accompanied by beautiful peony blossoms and leafy tendrils. These symbols are among the most enduring Chinese motifs. The wheel is the most important Buddhist symbol and represents the cyclical view of life that is central to Buddha’s teachings. The umbrella represents authority and protection, the canopy represents royalty, the endless knot symbolizes longevity and eternity, and the vase represents everlasting harmony. In contrast to the more complex main border, the simple pearl inner guard border adds balance to the composition. Rich symbolism, a restrained color palette and beautiful detailing make this vintage Chinese rug both meaningful and sophisticated. Rendered in variegated shades of indigo, navy blue, ink blue, cerulean, baby blue, sienna, camel, ecru, tan, sand, khaki, beige, vanilla, champagne, cream and beige. Perfect for living room, front room, dining room, bedroom, lounge, loft, parlor, great room, state room, drawing room, office, studio, library, or study.
