Amritzar Carpet, circa 1920

About the Item

Amritsar, founded in 1577 is the largest city in the Indian state of Punjab. It lies about 15 miles east of the Pakistan border and is the center of Sikhism. The Sikhs principle place of worship and the main draw for Sikh pilgrims is the Golden Temple which, set on an island in a sacred POOL or Tank and only reached by a marble causeway. India has a rich history of weaving and was influenced by Persian rug designs during the Mughal emperors reign. The rugs of Amritsar have more of a western influence especially after Queen Victoria’s Great Exhibition of 1851 in Crystal Palace. The Exhibition opened a huge audience to the treasures of the orient and created a huge demand for luxurious exotic oriental artwork. Amritsar rugs have a soft earthy palette and burgundies are woven on a cotton foundation with a high-quality wool pile. This carpet has a design of elegantly drawn rising palmettes on a vertical vine. The border has a palmette vine pattern with the edge of the palmette resembling a cloud band. The field is in a washed apricot enclosed by an abrashed border of blues to greys.
