Mid 19th Century Indian Agra Carpet ( 15'8" x 17' - 477 x 518 )

About the Item

The ultra-classic 17th century pattern of cloud bands, palmettes and rinceaux has been reduced and compacted into an allover textile-like pattern of wriggling, vermiculite forms swimming in a cranberry sea of mobile palmettes and rosettes. The main border is equally elaborate, but still preserves classical elegance. The wine red field is closely covered by a compact sinuous cloud band, palmette, rosette, bird and stiff vinery pattern, all arranged around a small rosette centre. The main border features half and full cartouches and octofoils enclosing stylized peacocks. Indian weavers have made a specialty of square carpets. Well-woven antique in good condition. Measures: 15'8" x 17'0".
