Fine Vintage Indo-Tabriz Carpet
About the Item
As early as the 16th Century, Persian weavers began settling in India, initially employed by court-sponsored workshops to produce high-quality carpets for the Mughal nobility; this tradition has carried on for centuries, with Indian workshops continuing to weave exceptional and widely sought-after pieces, well into the 19th and 20th Centuries. This vintage example’s design is drawn from earlier carpets from Tabriz, well-known as among Persia’s most prestigious weaving centres, with a tradition dating back as early as the 14th Century.
The artist has employed a well-balanced all-over design, in a wide variety of vegetable dyed tones, including terracotta, ivory, and various greens, over a muted indigo ground and framed by a dozen individual decorative borders – a bold composition, especially well-suited to this pieces impressively large format.
This carpet is in very good to excellent condition for everyday use.
A handsome carpet, this piece would make a fine addition to any interior.
